Therapeutic Laser

Lasers function to support impaired cells and tissues by stimulating certain cell functions.  The term for this is photo biostimulation.  This produces a decrease in pain and inflammation while improving healing.

It is painless and effective.  Most patients experience improvement within a few visits. Dr. Gregory uses an InSight 40 infra red laser to help with a broad variety of problems. The high peak power (40,000 mW, 250 mW average) and 910 nm wave length permits treatment of deeper tissues.

Lasers produce coherent light which means that the waves match each other. This allows for a greater effect than the same wavelength light from a normal source. The effect on the portions of molecules that absorb the light is therefore much stronger than if you were simply out in the sun or under an infra red light bulb and significantly different chemical effects can occur.

Pulsing increases both chemical and mechanical effects. Pulsed lasers such as our InSight 40 limit the heating aspect to safe levels by producing brief pulses which are 160 times as powerful as its average power output. This model is also used by many dentists to speed healing and decrease inflammation during implant surgery.

One of the measurable effects of infrared laser photo biostimulation is an increased rate of ATP formation by the respiratory chain. ATP is the main energy currency in the cell. Light stimulation can knock rate limiting carbon monoxide or nitric oxide radicals off the last cytochrome in the chain thereby increasing metabolic rate. Light absorbed by a catalytic enzyme can also provide sufficient energy to move ADP to ATP directly. Another measurable effect is on a major controlling ion within the cell, calcium.

The depth of effective penetration also is determined by the power of the laser. Many of the lasers on the market unfortunately are underpowered for working below skin deep during any reasonable time frame.

Dr. Gregory frequently uses laser therapy to support the recovery of pinched nerves (compression neuropathies) along with manipulation and exercise which relieve the mechanical forces causing the compression.
