Why Sports Chiropractic?

Nelson Gregory, DC is not only a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician but also certified in rehabilitation and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

When you bring a problem to a chiropractor, your PCP, a sports MD or a PT they are looking at the same person with the same anatomy, physiology, function and goals.  Unfortunately differences in their specialization, terminology and profession's history can result in very different recommendations and care.  Dr. Gregory makes every effort to maintain a broad understanding and perspective to coordinate your care so that your needs are met by the best people.

The main risk factor for musculoskeletal injury is having had a previous injury.  The reason for this is that the initial injury was not completely rehabilitated.  Some factors were missed and not brought back to full function.  It may be that you were not functioning properly in the first place which allowed you to be injured.

Your body is an integrated whole.  Each part affects all of the others and is coordinated by your nervous system. Once injured or in pain your body automatically attempts to compensate by moving differently. This creates high and unusual stress on all involved tissues; joints, muscles, etc and requires more energy from your body as a whole.  These abnormal movements and imbalances do not reverse even after the pain disappears.
If not corrected with effective rehabilitation, a degenerative cycle begins in which joint damage occurs which interferes with nerve control causing further damage and pain.  Under these conditions, there is greater risk of sprains and strains and repetitive stress injuries to the muscle as in triggerpoints and tendinosis as in rotator cuff degeneration become more likely.

Your spine protects your central nervous system and its optimum performance is essential for all activities. This is why Sports Chiropractors have such a strong focus on improving spinal and nervous system function.
